Drying Sunny Boy
The evening of October 7th, 2022, dozens of special shape hot air balloons were inflated for a balloon glow at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. A developing storm system moved in over balloon fiesta park, resulting in a downpour of rain which lasted nearly twenty minutes. This resulted in numerous special shape balloons being soaked by the rain. As dampness is detrimental to the integrity of balloon materials, it was essential that each balloon envelope was allowed to dry completely as soon as possible. Sunny Boy was sheltered in a hanger at the Albuquerque Sunport while crew placed fans around the envelope and carefully handled the fabric to facilitate its drying.
This photo captures an unlikely moment as balloonists spread the balloon’s load tapes while underneath the envelope to facilitate drying.
