Dream On

from $80.00

“Dream On” is the name of the 90,000 cu ft Aerostar S57H balloon envelope in the photo.

The opportunity to make this photograph came about as I was accompanying a commercial hot air balloon pilot for a training flight with his student in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

The balloon had been laid out with its top facing east towards the rising sun. I was tasked with holding open the balloon’s throat during inflation, allowing me a view inside as the envelope was pressurized with cold air.

The student pilot was checking his work at the balloon’s top while backlit by the rising sun. The result was a strong contrast between the balloonist against the spiral design of the balloon’s fabric. The sun’s light quickly drops off into shadows, following the contours of the envelope.
