Good Friday Tomé Hill #1

from $80.00

This photo was taken from the basket of a hot air balloon on Good Friday during the annual Tomé Hill pilgrimage.

The crosses featured in this photograph were permanently erected on the hill in the 1950’s, however the cultural significance of Tomé Hill predates the 17th century. The hill marks the destination of one of New Mexico’s most important religious pilgrimages, taking place each year on Good Friday.

During the flight, winds moved the balloon first to the east, than north side of the hill. Using a telephoto lens, the photographer captured the photo from the hill’s north side aiming south. The photo was particularly challenging to take as the balloon’s position relative to the hill was constantly changing during the flight.

Tomé Hill rises 400 feet above the Rio Grande floodplain and is located in Valencia County, New Mexico. The Manzano Mountains are seen prominently in the distance.
